The end of the year is nigh and that means planning for the new year! This year has brought a lot to the digital marketing world, however as marketers we have to stay ahead of the game. Digital marketing is changing all the time and so are the trends that help our campaigns have a wider reach online. However, the best way for our campaigns to get the most out of our techniques is to catch on to a trend before it’s even become a trend- that’s the tricky part. So which digital marketing trends should you keep your eye on this new year?

Branded communities

We’ve spoken a lot about brand awareness this year, however we think that next year it’s going to be even bigger. Promoting and encouraging brand advocacy is one of the most powerful marketing techniques out there at the moment. That’s why this year, brands have been focusing on marketing their businesses to existing customers in a way to encourage brand advocacy. So the next logical way to develop this strategy even more is to start your own online branded community. This will be the perfect place to re-market to old customers, keep engaging with current customers and connect with new customers. Additionally it will also be a great way to conduct some target audience research to develop your business into what you customers want.

More personalisation

We’re sure you’ve received a marketing email with your name on it plenty of times before. However in 2017 we think that personalisation within marketing will step up even more, particularly when it comes to marketing automation. Marketing automation software is getting smarter every day and it’s only a matter of time until you can start directing social media campaigns, website push notifications and more to individuals with added personal touches. This will help appeal to many consumers needs when it comes to marketing online- they want content that is relevant and personal to them.

Big data

Just like marketing automation software, analytics tools and databases are getting even smarter too, especially CRM (customer retention management) software. This means that as marketers we will be able to carry out more analysis on our audience and their behaviour, giving us an invaluable insight into what may be working well and what may need some slight improvements. However, remember that with any marketing software, the software is only as good as the user. So keep up to date with the latest data mining and analysis tools and your digital marketing will be off to a flying start in the new year.

Mobile specific

More people own  mobile phone than a flushing toilet. So it’s no surprise that mobile will be taking the forefront when it comes to marketing next year. Mobile devices have so many functionalities these days, it’s becoming easier for marketers to send out their messages in a variety of ways. In 2017, marketers can expect to be setting up more in-app ads, creating push notifications, sending mobile specific email campaigns and more.

IoT (internet of things)

The IoT (internet of things) has been a hot topic throughout 2016. However, as we said earlier, with technology advancing every single day, don’t be too surprised when the IoT becomes a primary marketing channel. The IoT includes any device in your home that connects to the internet in some way. So this could be a games console, camera or even your fridge! In the near future marketers will be able to push personalised notifications, marketing campaigns and more straight to any of these devices. We’re not entirely sure this will be ready for 2017 but it may be sooner than you think.
