As technology has advanced so has the way we search for things online. In later years, voice search has emerged as a game-changer in the way people use search engines. We’ve even mentioned it from time to time in some of our digital marketing trends posts! And with the increasing popularity of virtual assistants like Siri, Google Assistant, and Alexa, it’s become even more important to make sure our websites are optimised for voice search. That’s why we thought we’d create a post showing you exactly how to optimise your website for voice search.   

Understand natural language

Voice searches are more conversational because they reflect the way people naturally speak. To cater to this, it’s essential to optimise your content for long-tail keywords and phrases that mimic spoken language. Consider how users might phrase their queries verbally, and incorporate these phrases naturally into your content. For example, if someone was searching for a coffee shop to go to with voice search, they wouldn’t say “coffee shops, London” they would probably say something like “find coffee shops near me that serve macchiatos”. 


Focus on local SEO

We’ve spoke about local SEO and it’s important alot on our blog. And it’s no different when it comes to optimising your website for voice search. Voice searches often have local intent, with users seeking information about nearby businesses or services. So make sure your website is optimised for local SEO by including location-specific keywords, updating your Google My Business listing, and obtaining positive online reviews. Be as specific as possible. Instead of using locations like “London” or “South West London”, use locations like “Wimbledon” or “Richmond”. 


Mobile optimisation

Almost all voice searches happen on mobile devices. Therefore, it’s important to have a mobile-friendly, responsive, website. By having a responsive design, fast loading times, and an intuitive mobile user interface your website contributes to a positive user experience and can enhance your website’s voice search performance.


Featured snippets

Virtual assistants like Siri, frequently pull information from featured snippets to answer voice queries. So make sure you structure your content in a way that answers common questions. This can increase the chances of your content being used in voice search results. Use clear headers, bullet points, and concise paragraphs to provide easily digestible information.


Schema markup

Now this is a bit of a technical one. But by implementing schema markup on your website search engines can understand the context of your content better. This makes it more likely for your website to appear in voice search results. Schema markup provides additional details about your content, such as reviews, ratings, and other relevant information that can enhance the user experience. Test, test and test again!
