In today’s technologically advanced age, leveraging data to craft your online marketing strategy is not just an option but a necessity. This is especially true for SMEs. Last year’s transition to Google Analytics 4 (GA4), whilst turbulent, offered businesses an enhanced platform to gather, analyse, and interpret data in a more advanced way. These kind of data insights allow for more informed and effective decision-making when it comes to your online marketing strategy. But with so much data how can you be sure you’re using it in the right way? That’s why we’ve put together a quick article about how to use digital marketing analytics to drive your SME’s online strategy.

Firstly of, you need to ensure that your GA4 is set up. GA4 is the latest version of Google Analytics, designed with a focus on user privacy and cross-platform tracking. Unlike its predecessor Universal Analytics, GA4 provides a more comprehensive view of user interactions by integrating data across websites and apps. This dynamic approach helps SMEs understand customer journeys better, from initial contact to conversion.

Setting up GA4 for your SME

  1. Install and configure: begin by setting up a GA4 property for your website and/or app. This involves adding a tracking code to your site or integrating the GA4 SDK into your app. You can either do this yourself or with the help of a digital marketing or website professional.
  2. Set up goals and events: decide what success looks like for your business. Is it newsletter sign-ups, purchases, contact form submissions or a mixture of all three? GA4 allows you to easily track them all. Again, you can do this yourself or get help from a marketing professional.

Analysing user behaviour

  1. Exploring user data: there are many different data sets you can look at in GA4. However for beginners we would recommend the “reports” tab in the left hand navigation bar. The reports tab is full of pre-made reports for things like acquisition, user pathways and conversions. If you’re more confident with GA4 you can also create custom reports to focus on specific segments in the “explore” tab.
  2. Understanding user pathways: In the “explore” tab you can also pick from pre-made reports like path exploration. This report lets you track individual user journeys and see them laid out in an easy to follow way. By analysing these different pathways, you can identify common drop-off points or successful funnels. This is invaluable for refining your marketing strategies, optimising user experiences, and increasing conversions.

Data-driven decision making

  1. Evaluating campaign performance: GA4’s enhanced data collection allows for better evaluation of marketing campaigns. Use UTM parameters to track the effectiveness of various channels (social media, email, paid ads). By adding these parameters, GA4 provides a detailed view of which campaigns drive the most traffic and conversions, helping you allocate your marketing budget more effectively. If you’re unsure about how to add UTM parameters to campaigns, get in touch with a technical SEO specialist.
  2. Predictive metrics and insights: GA4’s machine learning capabilities are pretty impressive. They can predict future user behaviour, such as potential churn or purchase probability. By leveraging these insights, SMEs can tailor their marketing efforts to target high-value users and optimise resources. However, like with all AI and machine learning, Google’s predictions are not guaranteed so always make sure to air on the side of caution. These kinds of forecasts should be used to guide online strategies – not define them.

Continuous improvement

Digital marketing is an ever-evolving field and so are the data technologies we use. Therefore the only way for SMEs to use data to craft successful online marketing strategies is to regularly review and update their analytics strategy. By harnessing the data and insights provided, you can make data-driven decisions that not only improve your online strategy but also drive business growth and customer satisfaction.
