Anybody can write – but it takes something extra to be a copywriter. Especially when it comes to writing for a website. When you write website copy there are quite a lot of things to consider – SEO, user experience, design and of course conversions. However if you’re at the beginning of your writing journey or just need a few tips we have the perfect building blocks for you to get started. So how exactly do you write effective copy for your SMEs website?

Get to the point

One of the most important things about writing effective copy for your SMEs website is to tell a story in an economic way. Don’t beat around the bush or add any pointless embellishments. Just get to the point. Users come to websites to find information quickly so it’s imperative there is no extra fluff that takes away from your story. Push important messages to the forefront and save the flourishes for your novel writing.

Keep it short and snappy

Similarly to the previous point, you need to be economic with your writing. Users don’t want to spend too much time scanning through paragraphs upon paragraphs. Keep passages short and simple so that you can keep the user’s attention. If you’re concerned that you can’t say everything you want, prop your shorter paragraphs up with strong visuals. After all, an image is worth a thousand words.

Nail the basics

Nailing the basics like spelling, punctuation and grammar isn’t too hard to master. So make the effort to ensure your copy is technically correct. Not only will this make reading your website easier for users – it’s also great for SEO too. Content that is easy to follow makes your website more user-friendly. This in turn will encourage people to come back to your website and not exit too early.

Add a sprinkling of SEO

After you’ve nailed the basics you can start to add in some SEO. SEO is important if you want to rank in the top organic results for certain keywords. This is great if you want to attract alot of new users to your website. If you’re unsure about how to begin make sure you have a look at our SEO guide specifically for SMEs.
